Day 291 and Aldi's

A couple of days ago, I happened across an article about Aldi's being a "grocer for the recession". It was at this link: http://205.188.238.109/time/nation/article/0,8599,1854348,00.html. You'll probably have to copy and paste it into your browser. Someday I'm going to figure out how to put clickable links on this thing. Or if you can't get that to work, go to google and put in Aldi's and recession and it will pull it up. It was a Time article.

The article itself was quite interesting. It told about how Aldi's is smaller than most grocery stores, carries mostly their own private brand labels, and does not have a big variety of choices. Want eggs? There are boxes of one dozen eggs, all the same. No brown eggs, no 18 ct. eggs, just cartons of one dozen eggs. You have to take your own bags, use empty boxes, or buy their bags. You don't have to worry about a cart dinging your car in their parking lot. You pay a quarter to get a cart and you get the quarter back, when you put the cart back. So no stray carts everywhere because someone was too lazy to walk a few steps to put them back.

I am a huge fan of Aldi's. We got one in Enid about a year and a half ago. For the most part, I've been very pleased with their food and their prices. I have tried some of their meats and their frozen boneless skinless breasts are really good. Their beef and pork chops have been fine too, but I do often find better bargains on sale at other grocery stores. I just watch the ads and try to stock up when it's on sale.

The article also mentions Save-a-lot. I used to shop there before we got Aldi's. I liked it for the most part, but it wasn't very convenient (Aldi's is just down the street from Wal-mart and Save-a-lot is all the way across town. At any rate, if you haven't tried these stores out and you have one in your area, give them a try. As always though, the most important thing to do is KNOW YOUR PRICES. That way you know if you're getting a bargain!

Aldi's freaks me out. It's like it's supposed to be a grocery store, but their ad in last Sunday's paper had laptop computers, digital televisions, DVD makers and HD camcorders. I had only been there once, but after one of your other posts, we walked down there. I did buy a couple of bags of salad mix for 59 cents each.

LOL, Linda! They do have some interesting stuff for sale in addition to the groceries. Most of the time I buzz right past that and do not pay attention. I have got a couple of interesting things there though. One of them was a canvas closet thing for Tasha's room since it doesn't have a closet.
